Wed 8-Apr-10

Well, a couple of developments this morning:

Simon is OFF propofol (the sedative he has been on), and his wrists are no longer tied in cloth restraints!!!  Now he can reach up with his right hand and scratch or rub his face and head - which he does frequently - it must feel good!!  (He hasn't been moving his left hand and arm much, although he CAN - they're not sure if the nerves are still weak from the injury, or whether it just hurts him to move that arm.)  He also has been breathing on his own most of the time, with just a few hours on ventilator assist overnight.

His head CT scan apparently shows improvement - resolution of the minor bleeding, decreased swelling.
The only bad news is that his chest x-ray shows he's developing some pneumonia now.  He's on antibiotics, and they are going to try to get him positioned more upright today, which should help his lungs.  Keep your fingers crossed that the pneumonia doesn't turn into a major problem.

The doctors say that, with his CT showing improvement and the propofol off, we may hope to see some improved mentation in the next few days too - another reason to cross fingers!!!

  1. Hi Ann,
The fingers are definitely crossed as they have been since this happened! It is great to hear steady good news. We hope to see you tomorrow when we come for our arranged visit.

Heska would like to do something for the two of you, but I thought it might be too early to know what would be helpful. Is there anything you can think of that isn't being tended to? Think about it and let me know later.

Healing thoughts are steadily coming his way. Liz

  2. More positive news Ann! That is great! As we say in German, good developments take time. We definitely keep our fingers crossed that Simon continues to go improve. With great luck in a week or so he will be able to read the one or other message of your friends and start making jokes!

    All the best wishes,

    Laura & Bernd

  3. Ann,

I am so encouraged to learn of Simons' progress. As you well know, he was with me in spirit, soul and energy, every step of the way through my progress when I dealt with the same unknown path he is now working through. I'm a silver lining kind of guy and have no doubt Simon will be back to doing what Simon does; living life as an 'Avid Everything-ist'. I Have faith, trust and a strong belief that he will come through this stronger and wiser. He'd better because he has 3 roses from my back yard that need tending as only Simon can do.

  4. Hi Ann,

Been meaning to get on and offer my best wishes and on behalf of all the vets in Australia and especially need to as our journal came today and I mentioned Simon-"Prof Simon Turner is an Aust graduate from Melbourne...He is a real leader in our profession and typifies the many Aust graduates who have forged an academic career in the US. One of his favorite quotes is that the road to success is under continuous construction." Thinking and praying for him with Simon's colleagues from Australia.

  5. I'm so happy to hear that Dr. T is showing improvement! He is an inspiration and an incredible role model to all of us that work for him at the Turner lab. He is in my thoughts and prayers.
